Textile Tour of Japan 2026 outline As of Nov 29, 2025

 

The general principle of this trip is for the participants to experience the history and culture of Japan as well as learning about Japanese textiles by visiting various places where traditional Japanese textiles are produced. These activities are managed through the knowledge and experience of Shuji Yamazaki as the guide. Shuji takes a maximum of 12 people so you can experience the real Japan in a small convivial group. As this is not a trip offered by a travel company, we are all personally responsible for our own air ticket and travel insurance.

 

DATE: START END *November 1 (Sun.) *November 15 (Sun.) *Tour dates tentative PRICE: **$7,750- LAND ONLY - The travellers are responsible for organising their own air ticket and travel insurance. - We meet at the hotel in Tokyo on November 1 (full details including transport options willl be provided).

Please note that wheat allergy, vegetarians/vegans are not catered for during the tour. If you have special food requirements (food allergy or religious needs), please talk to Shuji before the application.

Good general fitness is required (ie: being able to walk for extended periods and up & down stairs unaided).

 

**Based on twin share, for single room please add $1000 supplement. Non-refundable $1000 per person deposit is required to secure your place in the tour. (Deposit will be refunded, if the tour does not go ahead)

 

The price includes: 14 nights accommodation in Japan, local transport (excluding the trip to the hotel in Tokyo on arrival and transport on free time), 14 breakfasts, 7 dinners, 1 lunch, 5 hands-on activities. Not included: meals other than specified, drinks at meals and admission fees.

ITINERARY DAY 1 - TOKYO - Meet the group at the hotel in Tokyo for the Welcome Dinner.

DAY 2 & 3 - NAGOYA - Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology (textile pavilion) - Japanese Cooking Class, Hands-on Activity - 1 - Arimatsu Shibori Kaikan, Hands-on Activity - 2: Shibori - cotton scarf

DAY 4 & 5 - Stay in TAKAYAMA Hida Sashiko Shop and a hidden vintage textile shop.  Time to explore historical township of Takayama

DAY 6, 7, 8 & 9 - Kyoto - Nishijin Textile Centre Hands-on Activity - 3: Weaving Place Mat - Kinkaku-ji Temple, the Golden Pavilion - Ryoan-ji Temple, dry stone garden - Walk on the Philosopher's path from Ginkaku-ji Temple to Nanzenji Temple (2km) - Shijo-Kawaramachi for shopping.(secret needle and fabric shop and other delights) - A free day to explore Kyoto

DAY-10 & 11 - NIIGATA - Visit renowned textile artist Akiko Ikeʼs shop Ginka Mokukindo Hands-on Activity-4: Chiku Chiku cross body bag or pincushion making workshop

DAY 12, 13 &14 - Nobuko Miyakeʼs Quilt Studio Hands-on Activity-5: Silk Dragonfly brooch & kimono necklace making workshop - A free day in Tokyo (Textile street in Nippori)
