Full day workshop with one of Japan’s most exciting textile artists
Join us for the only full-day workshop to be offered by Akiko Ike on her visit to Australia in July 2025.
Experience her technique and philosophy of Boro Chiku-Chiku in a full day’s stitching experience. Working with vintage Japanese fabrics brought from Akiko’s collection you will learn while making an enchanting ‘Bira-bira’ (fluttering) decorative piece. Fully embracing the Japanese principle of mottainai (the Japanese principle of treasuring and respecting , of not wasting) we will learn her techniques for giving new life to old fabric with her bespoke threads and needles. A small trunk show and shop will also be available on the day.
Akiko Ike
At the age of sixty, Akiko Ike began creating her stitched pieces, using thin, worn out (boro) indigo-dyed nappies, and old work clothes. Giving these and other old textiles, such advertising banners, and wrapping cloths, new life by stitching with strong new thread, she has developed a distinctive personal style she calls Boro Chiku Chiku. Akiko Ike’s works have been exhibited all over Japan and the world and she has been a feature artist at L’Amour-du-Fils and the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts. Her joyful approach and playful creativity are firmly rooted in her Niigata life which she will share with us.
